Jaime Tristan Ocampo Flores Jr.

August 15, 1965 – June 19, 2019

While many millennials post their pictures during rallies on social media today, many activists of the ‘80s evaded the camera. Photographers in mobilizations were usually scrutinized to determine whether they work for established media or are military agents trying to document faces of activists for their dossiers.

In one rally, however, Tristan was captured in a photo that was prominently featured in a Mr. and Ms. Magazine’s special edition. Captioned as The Magnificent Seven. He was one of the seven activists who faced General Olivas in a tense face-to-face negotiation in Mendiola in 1984.

When Tristan graduated from UP, he chose to dedicate himself to civil service. To supplement the meager earnings of a government employee, Tristan put up a signage business with a friend.

He died of a heart attack in the arms of his family where he was happiest.

You were the best thing that ever happened to me. I mean it. Thank you for showing me that some men can be faithful and loving. To see you waiting for me outside my classes gave me joy and excitement and this is one of the many things you did to surprise me. With you, life was a meaningful adventure. Indeed, to love and be loved is one of the more joyful experiences in life. Enjoy being with Jesus in heaven, Tristan, Thank you for sharing your life with me.” — A friend
